Nobody drinks a bottle of vodka for fun, and that’s a damn fact.

"I’m sorry, I don’t recognize you. I haven’t seen anyone in years. What’s your name?" He sat down beside her on the floor and frowned slightly. "I’m sorry"

Adrian did her best to hold back her tears. It didn’t work out so well. “I’m sorry…it’s my fault those men took you. I wasn’t strong enough to protect you.” She wiped her eyes and sniffed. “Im…Adrian.”

"Adrian?" Dan cupped her cheek, frowning deeply. "Oh God. Don’t tell me you’ve spent all this time beating yourself up."

"Of course I have! They took you away and I was to dumb to find you!" She buried her face in her hands and sobbed. "I’m so sorry."

He wrapped his arms around her tight and gently rocked her back and forth. “It wasn’t your fault. None of it was your fault. I’m just so happy you’re alright.”

She blinked and stared up at him. “You…you remember me? Do you really?”

He nodded. “I remember you. I just didn’t recognize you. It’s been years. No one looks the same.” He shook his head.

"Not the guy that came into the apartment, the guy in the woods. Have you ever played poker? He had bluff written all over him." He shook his head. "I hate this."

"Harker is an old friend of mine. I trust him. He’s helped me out of a lot of tight spots before." Adrian kept trying to convince herself as much as Daniel. There had been something off about him

He just nodded and looked out the car window. The car stopped at a red light just before the airport and the doors unlocked. Suddenly Dan was pulled out of the car. He struggled as more grabbed onto him. “Adrian!” He was pulled from the door and dragged off as the car sped away to the plane and Adrian was thrown on to it, keeping distance between them

"Daniel!" Adrian fought against the door, her fists slamming against the window. "DANIEL! No!!!" Frantic she looked for a way out, trying every for and window but all she could do was stare as they took him away from her.

Dam fought and struggled against them, fighting even harder once he realized who was taking him. He knew he was in trouble, and that it wasn’t going to be easy to get out of this one. He just hoped and prayed Adrian would still be there when he got out.

Adrian was brought back home and thrown out of the car onto the sidewalk before it took off

Adrian sucked in a sharp breath as the hard ground bruised and tore at her skin. But nothing hurt worse than the realization Daniel was gone. She hadn’t been able to protect him. Tears streamed down her face. This was not the end of it. She’d get him back. She had to.

The torture started once Dan was drugged and dragged into a bright room. They started with seeing how stable Dan’s Extremis was. They tested his limits, going from paper cuts to the loss of full limbs. Extremis stayed stable the entire time. It took months. Between the actual damage and the time it took Dan to heal, it had been months.

In the beginning he fought back and struggled, but as time went on he gave up. Somehow it didn’t hurt as much when he gave in.

Months. It had been months of sleepless nights searching for clues, of distressed phone calls and drunken stupors to numb the pain. But she was no closer to finding AIM or Daniel than she had been that first day. This was all her fault. He might be dead because of her and she had let it happen

Months turned into years, three to be specific, with no sign of an end for the torture. Once they knew Daniel could handle everything, they went on to see if they could duplicate it and even improve his Extremis. Shorter recovery time, faster healing, and the ability to use it as a weapon.

Dan was kept hungry, cold, and in the dark, but he never made an attempt to escape. They’d taken the fight out of him, that was until one of them mentioned Adrian. It was like a sudden slap to the face. He remembered why he needed to get out of there.

When night fell, Dan used his new skills to kill the guards of his cell. After he got the door open, he ran for it. Anyone that got in the way was taken out. When he busted through the doors, he just kept running as they shot at him. One grazed him, sparking Extremis. A few miles away, a cop saw Dan running and radioed that there was a man on fire running along the highway. The story made national news. Everyone poked fun at the cop, but anyone who knew Daniel knew it was a sign

Adrian was curled up on the couch, her face pale and sunken from lack of proper nutrition as she flipped through the channels aimlessly. Then she saw the story of the man on fire. Her heart stopped. Did she dare hope? Jumping to her feet, she grabbed her car keys and burst from the door.

Dan had been brought in and sent to a state metal institution. They thought he’d cracked when he told them he was Daniel stark and that he had the ability to catch fire. He sat in his room and stared at the wall. They fed him and kept him warm, but this was no different than AIM.

Adrian pushed through the doors of the mental institution. The cops had told her where they had taken him and she was determined to find him before anyone else. “My name is Adrian an I am here for the boy who caught fire.” After a few weird looks, they finally lead him to his room and let her in. “Daniel?”

Dan picked his head up and frowned. “You another doctor? Do you actually believe me or are you just calling me Daniel for the hell of it?”
